Project Management (IT) Question

Analysis (As Project Leader walking the reader through the following):

-Conflict Resolution (Potential conflicts and resolution tactics)?

-Problem Solving?

-Decision Making (How will critical decisions in the execution phase be made)?

I am putting together a project analysis piece for a software upgrade to the "Blackboard" education suite used by many universities. The goal of the software upgrade is to provide users of the software the ability to recieve notifications when a user post something directly to their own discussion on the discussion board. I am looking for someone with project management experirence, to assist me in how to develop the three bullets above. I understand how to format the Business Charter, but I have been unsuccessful in finding a good example of an Analysis for a project. Help please.

Explanation / Answer

CONFLICT RESOLUTION:

Conflict is said to be a situation in which there is a competition and in which the involved parties are aware of the probable incompatibility of the future positions and each involved party is eager to gain a position which is incompatible to the wishes of the oter party. Conflict Management in a team involves the ability to compromise, settle the personal differences of the involved party, set goals and solve problems efficiently. Project Managers and Team Leaders should be provided with training in this area so as to handle the conflict during a proect. Conflicts in the project is not necessarily an unfavorable event if it is properly managed. But, it can also be the reason of the fall of an organization if not dealt in a proper manner. Hence, project leaders and managers are expected to maintain a right balance so as to handle its intensity.

PROBLEM SOLVING:

Team Leaders and Project Managers are bound to face problems wth every project but by building problem solving skills and applying them in the project, it can be assured that the problems are dealt with priority and promptly. Problems in an organization can be big or small but by using systematic approach the problems can be solved more effectively. Following are the five problem solving steps that could be used to deal with a problem in an organization:
1. You need to firstly define the problem exactly. In many situations people are not aware of the problem at the first place and hence its resolution becomes difficult.
2. Identify the cause that is leading to the problem. This will help to avoid the problem in the future.
3. Generate ideas that can be used to fight with the causes and provide solution for the problem.
4. After generating multiple solutions, we need to select the best out of them that suits our present situation.
5. At last you need to act upon the solution chosen by you.

DECISION MAKING:

Decision making is an integral process of an organization. There could be be several approches taken by the project manager in order to arrive at a decision but what is important is the process used to take that coorect decision. Sometimes, project decisions are difficult and hence we consider the scenarios with time, cost, quality in order to make the right decision. The reason for increase in the decision making problems are poor project planning, poor change control and pathetic status tracking and inability to take important decisions promptly.
