Explanation / Answer

Consider a single server queuing system. If the arrival rate is 50 units per hour and each customer takes 36 seconds on average to be served, what is the average number of customers in the line? Answer to 2 decimal places .

We have following information,

Customers arrive at a rate of 50 per hour therefore Arrival rate = 50 customers per hour

Service time is 36 seconds per customer therefore, in one hour number of customers served = one hour / 36 second = 60 * 60 second / 36 = 100 customers

Therefore Service rate µ = 100 customer per hour

The average number of customers waiting in line Lq = ^2 / [µ (µ-)]

Lq = 50^2 / [100 *(100-50)]

Lq = 2500 / (100 *50)

Lq = 0.50 customers

Average number of customers in the line is 0.50
