Question
Determine which problem the two cases below suffer from: hidden terminal problem or exposed terminal problem or none of them? Suppose that we do not adopt RTS/CTS a) Suppose we have four nodes placed in a row. Each node's signal can only transmit until its immediate neighbors (e.g., A's signal can only reach B and C and cannot reach 0). A is sending packets to B. Meanwhile, C wants to send packets to 0. However, C senses the signal transmitted by A and thinks that I should hold on since the media is occupied by A right now. b) For the same four nodes as in the previous question. Suppose D is transmitting packets to C. Meanwhile, A wants to transmit packets to B. Since A cannot sense the signal transmitted from D, it thinks that the media is free. Then, it starts transmitting packets to B.Explanation / Answer
(a) In the first question the problem arises is known as hidden terminal problem because Node D can communicate with node C and node A signal can reach to node B and C . Now C cannot transmit to D because A is occupird by B.
(b) In the second part, network suffers from exposed terminal because A cannot sense D due to which node A cannot identify trnasmission between D and C, and starts transmitting to node B.
