Question
A coworker has recently confided in you about a problem she has been having with your supervisor. She explains that his inappropriate comments and sexual advances are creating a hostile work environment for her. She doesn’t know what her options are. She explains that she has very little money for lawyers and that he has threatened to fire her if she tells anyone. What would you recommend she do? Walk me through the steps from start to finish, briefly touching on all possible outcomes. Are her fears (about the lawyer and firing) justified? Why or why not?
Explanation / Answer
In such case, i would tell her that we would record a video secretly on how is he behaving with her in the workplace. This is to ensure that there is a first hand evidence on the supervisor. So, even if the supervisor tries to act smart the lady has the video to prove him guilt.
Secondly, i would ask her to talk to few people about the way supervisor is behaving with her, and also tell her to inform them of the threat of firing her, in case she tries to inform this to anyone. This way, she will have few people in support of her while she is speaking against the supervisor.
Thirdly, ask these few people to record a video on the way how supervisor is behaving with other females as well. That will gather a strong evidence against him.
Lastly, when enough evidence is gathered, then supervisor should be put at shame, by revealing these videos and informing the boss of the supervisor the way he is behaving in the workplace, and ultimately create a scenario where supervisor is either fired or he himself resigns.
She need not go to a lawyer, everything can be sorted out with a little patience and intelligence. And instead of her firing, she can plan supervisor's firing.
