Question
Suppose that you have been assigned to be the leader (project manager) of a project designed to evaluate which new city in Missouri should be the first location for a national restaurant chain (think Olive Garden). You are to do whatever necessary from the selection of the location through the opening of the restaurant.
Work with your "project colleagues" in this discussion to brainstorm 5-10 of the highest level Work Breakdown Structure tasks that would need to be completed.
For one of these highest level tasks (ideally one that someone else has not selected), break that task down to the next level of the 3-5 tasks that need to be performed to complete that task.
In subsequent postings, discuss the types of leadership personnel would you need on your team, which tasks those personnel would be assigned to and any thought on how you would you organize the project?
Explanation / Answer
Being a project manager of a national restaurant chain, if I were to evaluate that in which new city in Missouri should should be the first location of our new restaurant; the necessary steps that I would take from selection of the location to the opening of the restaurant will be based on the work breakdown structure for opening restaurant as follows:
After identifying the primal functional deliverables, highest level of work break down structure for the assigned activity will constitute of activities namely:
The above will be the top level deliverable of the project. These levels will further be sub-divided into sub-deliverables by utilizing the hierarchy. The above mentioned deliverables are further fragmented to sub-deliverables.
As required by the project I will break Strategic Planning (highest level of work break down structure) into next level.
Strategic Planning is further sub divided into following small deliverables at next level:
Under allocation of resource comes the stage of finalizing location in Missouri for our new restaurant.
The stage is further sub divided into following stages:
I will need different types of leaders at different departments in order to make this restaurant project successful. Few leadership styles that I would employ at different levels will include:
Autocratic Leaders: I will employ autocratic leaders at front office, so that take immediate decisions whenever required in tough situations.
Democratic Leaders: Managers with this trait are very helpful in motivating employees and creating sense of satisfaction in employees. I will employ democratic manger in human resource department.
Consultative leadership: I will employ the manager with this trait in housekeeping department of the restaurant.
I would organize the project by delegating responsibilities to concern departments and keeping a close contact with these departments. I will built a strong communication channel between departments so that jobs assigned can be coordinated and done before the deadlines.
