Let's assume your university's website name is: www.mit.edu

In that case, from your terminal or command window, you can type following command:

traceroute -q 1 www.mit.edu

It will give you the number of routers that your message has gone through in order to reach your university'w website. I can't show thw output to you. You have to do it yourself. If you have any problem performing this. I can help you for sure.

Networks must be the routers through which your message has travelled to reach your university's web server. The longest is the delay between the routers, longer they are widely apart from each other.

If you are living across continents you'll find that there is one hop distance between the ocean territory.

For the longest hop distance you have to see your output.
