Question
Integrated Circuit Technology and Manufacturing How did the development of the transistor affect computer systems? What did the transistor replace? The following table shows manufacturing information for a particular integrated circuit chip. Compute the yield (as a percentage). Compute the cost per die Compute the new die area and new yield if the number of dies per wafer increases by 10% and the defects per unit area increases by 15%. Suppose that the yield of the integrated circuit varies as transistor and manufacturing technology evolves over time as indicated in the table below Compute the defects per unit area for each technology given a fixed die area of 200 mm^2.Explanation / Answer
(a)
For developing transistor it takes large space since it contains vaccum tubes and inside transistor
one should need to place large number of silicon chips. This is major drwaback and also it takes large
amount of electricity so, power consumption is very high.

(b)
(i)
Given Per cm2 , defect is 0.031
So for 20cm, defect is 0.031 x 20/10 ==> 0.062
Which means 6.2 percent.
So yield is 100 - 6.2 = 93.8%
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ii) Cost per die..
For one wafer, cost is $15
One wafer takes 100 dies.
So one die = 15/100 ==> 0.15
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
iii)
For 20cm it requirs 100 dies
So 1 cm takes 0.2 die
If number of dies increases 10% ==> 100 + 10 == 110
So increase size = 0.2 x 110 ==> 22cm
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(iv)
Defect will be calculated as = (100 - yield)
So defect for Tech.Gen.#1 ===> 100-85 = 15%
So defect for Tech.Gen.#2 ===> 100-89 = 11%
So defect for Tech.Gen.#3 ===> 100-92 = 8%
So defect for Tech.Gen.#4 ===> 100-95 = 5%
