Abraham Maslow’s theory of human needs plays a role of active tool in solving management issues relating to individual needs and desires. He describes a hierarchy based on lower order needs (that include psychological, social and safety concerns) to higher order needs (self esteem and actualization).

In an organization growth needs relates to higher order needs, as growth is directly connected with psychological factors like self esteem and self actualization. According to the deficit principle of needs theory, people acts in a way to satisfy their deprived needs. It is determined that motivated employees finding lots of higher growth need satisfaction through nonprofit and voluntarily work.

A leader can identify growth needs in followers by looking for traits like hunger for recognition (it relates to self actualization), proactive participation, and showing signs of motivated employee.

Many researchers agree that management of individual performance may harm team performance. The consequences of assessing individual performance also depends of several variables like nature of job, work environment of organizations and work team out put.

One reason behind managing individual performance may harm team performance is that team players may feed cheated and dissatisfied with the attention laid on other team members.

This issue can be addressed by concentrating on managing team performance by taking necessary steps like implementation of team learning. Sometime it is important that individual player back-off their optimal performance in order to enhance team performance.

In order to ensure that diversity does not result in conflict that negatively affect performance the leader should create strong channel of communication between team members. This will not only avoid conflicts but also help in creating strong teams. Apart from this integrating team members will ensure generation of creative ideas from diverse team members.

For managing diverse view points during team discussions it is important that leaders first accumulate all the ideas and that these view points can be discussed one by one with the team.
