Question

New memory technologies hold significant promise for improving future computing systems. FLASH has already made an impact in many consumer devices and is seeing applications in general purpose computing. Phase Change Memory (PCM) and Magneto-Resistive Random-Access Memory (MRAM) seem likely to see mainstream use. Answer the following for any one of these three technologies. Limit your answer to 200 words and at most one figure. (Please include the sources with your answers.) What are the key properties of this memory technology that distinguish it from standard SRAM and DRAM? How are these properties exploited in system design? Briefly show how the design of the memory cell results in these properties.

Explanation / Answer

a) The most important property that distinguish FLASH memory from SRAM and DRAM is its non-volatile nature, in other two they loses data when power is removed and its when flash comes into picture. But performance wise flash is slower than both.Where MRAM is having non- volatile in nature plus it has practically infinite endurance. It stores information in nanoscale with fast read and write latency. And the third one PCM is also a non -volatile memory but with low endurance of 10^8.
