Question
The West Birmingham Hospital Trust (WBHT) is an organization responsible for the health care of approximately 1.5 million people in the west of Birmingham and the surrounding area. Following the scrapping by the incoming government of the UK wide health database system in 2010 WBHT has found it necessary to completely update its IT systems Currently the WBHT runs three general hospitals (two having accident and emergency), two geriatric hospitals and a maternity hospital. In total there are approximately 1500 beds with an occupancy rate of 95% The aim of the proposed system is to maintain patient records in a secure manner but also make them available immediately at a patients bedside when necessary via portable devices. It will also track treatment and drug costs for each patient to enable the appropriate billing to take place (note that billing is a separate system run by the WBHT accounts department).Explanation / Answer
b) 1. Wireless network is a network of systems which does not contain any physical media connectivity.
2. Wireless network has an advantages and disadvantages.
3. Wired networks have existed for a long times, therefore have developed exponentially over the recent years. Improvements have been made in the fields of speed, security and reliability.
4.Wired networks offer the fastest transfer speed of all the networks. Gigabit Ethernet is currently the best choice for wired networks and provides speeds of up to one gigabit per second.
5. This is almost three times faster than the best wireless connection available and almost ninety times faster than a regular connection.
6. Wired networks consist of physical, fixed connects which are not prone to interference and fluctuations in available bandwidth caused by factors such as walls. Features such as shielding(adding an aluminium foil around the wires) and twisting at different strengths help reduce interference.
7. Wired networks also have a better security system than wireless networks. The network itself is harder to connect to since it has to be physically connected to through wires which can become a hassle when trying to hack into it.
8. Wireless network cannot be accessed from anywhere since the signals are not broadcastbroadcasted.
9. Wired networks mainly suffer the inverse of the advantages of a wireless network system such as lack of mobility and greater cost.
10. Wireless network require greater resources such as cabling, switch/hub and network cards to install and to maintain therefore the initial and long term costs are much higher.
11. It can also be a large loss when it has to be disassembled and reinstalled since they wiring has to be completely overhauled and is normally unusable after because of damage.
12. Wired networks can also be a hassle to install new components into because of all the hardware required to do this. Cables and network cards are required to install new computers to the system and wires need to be drawn from the switch to the computers.
13. The wiring can become messy and indistinguishable very quickly and can become a potential safety hazard due to the risk of triping.
c) Security is very important while dealing with public information. Here patients information is very confidential. Information security contains integrity, confidentiality, authentication. These three factors are considered in information security. Firewalls are used to avoid security threats in the organisation. Encryption techniques are used to provide security for the users confidential data. Because if any information missing, it leads to wrong treatment to the patients.
d) Chairmans thought is good. Today there is a rapid growth of technology. So, good treatment requires good products with technology. If the organisation provides systems and other equipment to the doctors, doctors use the technology and provide the best and timely treatment to the patients. So in today's scenario doctors need it hardware goods to treat patients. Time is more important while treating the patients. With the help of technology, doctors can save time and provide timely treatment for the patients.
