Question

The following table shows the schedule for producing executable outcomes on a three iteration project. We have just completed Day 40 for Iteration 1 (ignore weekends and holidays in order to keep the example simple). Note that tasks leading to these outcomes occur in parallel – the tasks are not carried out sequentially.

As the table shows, while Outcome E has just begun, it is not near to being completed.

Following good iterative scheduling practice, how should Outcome E be handled?

The contract for this project requires that the final product be delivered at the end of Day 120. Identify at least three strategies that might be followed in order to carry out this project by the promised deadline date.

Explanation / Answer

In the given project it is seen that there is parallel activities being carried out for the executable outcomes of the three iteration project. The 40 days for iteration 1 has been completed. The tasks are carried out parallely and task E has begun and not near to being completed. Following good iterative scheduling practice, Outcome E can be handled through motivating workers through appreciation and rewards for every good performance. Workers performance are to reported everyday and any low performer should be trained by expert or project leader to finish the task on time.

The three strategies which should be followed in order to carry out the project in a successful manner are as follows:

Strategy1. Teamwork is very important for completing the project as per the set milestones and deadline. There should be participation and involvement of project team members and project manager with team leaders for the planning of the project. In a project every individual should be cooperative and supportive with positive mentality to enhance team work and be satisfied with good team performance instead of individual performance. Low performer is a team should be guided and given scope to develop and improve skills by team leader.

Strategy 2. Communication is another crucial strategy which will enhance performance and help in completing the project on time. The project manager should be available always through phone or through messages and e-mails to answer queries and provide feedback in relation to project need. There shoule be online facility and smart phones with online messaging and video calling benefit so that any changes or implementation of new methods can be informed easily. Communicating next steps, delays, revisions with the project team by the project manager is possible through effective communication. Creating reports, holding meetings, displaying scoreboards, face to face meetings are possible through effective communication.

Strategy3. Identifying and creating Critical & Non-Critical Paths during the project management phase and evaluating the potential impact on the overall project will help to complete tasks on time. Identifying critical paths and providing working scenarios of best possible ways to manage delays will help in completing project before deadline.
