HANDS-ON NETWORKING FUNDAMENTALS By PALMER EDITION: 2ND 13 PUBLISHER: CENGAGE ISBN: 9781111306748 Case Project 7-1: pg337
The Thomas Brown Foundation is a fundraising and development organization for the Alberta Symphony Orchestra and the Brown Art Museum. The Thomas Brown Foundation has a board of directors and eight full- and part-time staff members, including an executive director. The board has authorized the staff to move into larger quarters in an office building. One part of the move involves networking the computers used by the staff, which has not been done in the old office. The staff uses Windows 7 Professional. Once a week, the chairperson of the board of directors drops into the present office to work for the Foundation and is expected to do the same in the future office. The executive director uses Mac OS X Lion on her laptop computer, and she wants to have a network connection available. The Foundation hires you through Network Design Consultants to assist with the network design.
Case Project 7-1: Recommending a Network Solution
The Foundation plans to share folders on the network along with other resources. You learn from talking with the executive director that the board currently does not plan to authorize the purchase of a server. With this information in mind, what type of network do you recommend? Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of what you recommend.
Case Project 7-2: Staff Training for Sharing Folders
The staff asks you to schedule a training session about sharing folders in Windows 7 Professional. What Windows 7 elements about folder sharing should be in your presentation?
Case Project 7-3: Reconfiguring a Network Connection
The executive director has heard about other organizations in which users have experienced problems when their network connectivity has been lost. She asks you to add to your presentation for Case Project 7-2 by including steps for reconfiguring a network connection.
Case Project 7-4: Enabling Shared Folder Access for the Board Chairperson
One of the staff has told the executive director that the board’s chairperson cannot access shared folders offered by the Windows 7 Professional computers through her computer running Mac OS X Lion. Can you find a solution to make this possible, because it is a very sensitive matter for the executive director? If you know of a solution, briefly explain how it works.
Case Project 7-5: Connecting Two Printers
The board has authorized the purchase of two laser printers, one that can print in black and white and another that can print in color. What is your recommendation for connecting these printers for shared use on the Foundation’s network?
Case Project 7-6: Cloud Computing
The Foundation is interested in exploring how it might take advantage of cloud computing for office software, fundraising software, and backing up its data. Prepare a brief report that explains how cloud computing might be of value to the Foundation.
Explanation / Answer
7.1 Recommend a network solution: if the management cannot provide a server then setting up wireless network is easy and price is affordable.
Wireless network is ultimate in network flexibility. it is very easy to share files and folders by all the people in the oragnization.
It requires secured password enabled as any outsiders cannot use wifi.
7.2 staff training for folder sharing
the file sharing has many options
the file can be shared between somebody, everybody or nobody.
nobody: the file is not shared with anyone
HOMEGROUP(READ): it can be shared in only read mode
HOMEGROUP(READ/WRITE):item available to homegroup with read/write permission
SOMEBODY: the file is shared among people whom chosen by admin
The types of permissions given are READ, READ/WRITE
7.3 Reconfiguring a network connection
step1: goto control panel>network and interenet>click network and sharing center link
step2: click fix a network problem link
step3: several troubleshooters to choose
internet connection, connections to shared folders, homegroup, network adapter, incoming connections to computer.
step4: follow the steps provided by troubleshooting guide.
step5: if troubleshooting can solve the problem then it is done otherwise we need to delete the connection and setup a new connection.
7.4 Enabling shared folder access for board chairperson
to enable the shared folder access the board chaiperson computer and the main computer should have same network. either pc or mac can serve as host
by using windows as host
goto control panel>network and sharing center>choose homegroup and sharing >change advanced sharing options >click on turn on file and printer sharing
in mac computer we can automatically open up a finder window where we can see shared machines , find the name of the machine to be shared with and click ok.
7.5 Connecting two printers
click start> goto devices and printers > add printer
first add laser printer then again black and white printer
It is always best option to havw two printers connected. It saves money, ink and time.
7.6 cloud computing
Earlier if we want to use any software we search, downlaod, install an then use in the computer. By using cloud all can be done on cloud through internet.
To share some files we need not download in one's computer, if we store the data in cloud it automatically shares to all the people connected in the network.
by using cloud computing the data is reliable, flexible, automatic software updates ,one can work from anywhere communication and sharing made easy.
It is always a better option to have cloud in the foundation if price is not a matter.
