Some of the ethical dilemmas for a front manager could be :
1. some of the team members engaging in long personal conversations during business hours
2. Team members taking long breaks at work or chatting on phone
3. Employees stealing cash/products of the company
4. A colleague misbehaving with another co-worker after office hours/outside office premises.
5. Co-workers coming in late/ taking undue advantage of leave policy.
6. A Co-worker who excels at performing his work discriminates against all the female employees.
b) What management theories could assist this manager to develop a solution/in solving the problem to the current issues the manager is facing?
Human Relations Theory could be relevant for the manager to develop a solution to current issues the manager is facing. Human relations theory by Elton Mayo promotes social interaction amongst employees, growth and development of employee and providing the right support system to enable the employee to function better.
c) What changes can the manager make to overcome the current issues?
The manager could have clearcut policies in place for continuous / habitual late coming and abuse of leave policy/misappropriation of cash. If the policies are already in place, it is important to have one- on one conversations with the employees and understand the reason behind their behavior. If it is ascertained that there is no genuine reason, then the employees should be warned of the potential consequences if they continue to do what they have been doing. The manager also needs to ensure he/she interacts with the team members in a continuous basis and understands their needs and potential to grow.
d) What are some skills lacking in the organization or manager that could help with this challenge/current issues?
The manager needs to be empathetic with the employees. If the manager doesn't understand the situation of the employees, he/she won't be able to propose the appropriate solution. The organization should hold team activities/workshops which can help bridge differences amongst employees. Effective communication is the key to any successful organization.
