Question
Research and create a written document that explains the network traffic that occurs when a computer is bootedthrough the process of visiting a web page, transferred to a secure web page to click on a link that will securely upload/download your paper using a transfer protocol. Please include in your assignment that while you are uploading your document, you also send an email announcing the transfer is completed. I am looking for all network information that occurs from the time the computer is booted until you submit an email for the assignment. Include ports, protocols, requests and responses, and any details needed.
Explanation / Answer
Answer: Details of network traffic are as follows:
1. When computer is booted: When a computer is booted initially, first of all it is required to obtain an IP address in order to connect to the network. For this purpose, Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is used. This protocol works on UDP ports 67 and 68.
2. When a web page is visited: Request for visiting a web page is submitted through HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP). This is an application layer protocol and works on port 80. Once a request is submitted through HTTP, DNS (Domain Name Server) service is used to resolve the IP address of remost host. Once remote host's address is resolved, next step to communicate with it for exchange of information. This network communication throguh routers, ISP and Internet backbone is mainly governed by TCP/IP protocol.
3. When being redirected to a secure web page: Required protocol to access a secure web page is HTTPS (HyperText Transfer Protocol Secure). Function of this protocol is same as HTTP, but with added security through Secure Socket Layer (SSL). Standard port for this protocol is 443.
4. When uploading/downloading a paper: When downloading/uploading a paper by click on a link on secure web page, the applicable protocol is File Transfer Protocol (FTP). This protocol works on ports 20 and 21.
5. When sending a mail: When a mail is sent over Internet, applicable protocol is Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP). This protocol works on port 25.
