1. Purpose of Operating System:-

Operating System is a program which acts as an intermediary between computer hardware and user. Its main purpose is to manage the resources of the computer such as memory, central processing unit, printer etc. It makes executing program convenient and efficient for the users.

2. Key features of Linux Operating System:

(a). Open Source - Code is freely available and the development is community based.

(b). Portable - Linux can be used on diferent types of hardware.

(c). Security - It provides security security features like password authentication etc.

(d). Multiprogramming - More than one application can run at the same time.

3.Origin of linux- Linux was a personal project of Linus Torvalds, who wanted to create a free operating system. Prior to linux, DOS, MAC OS, Unix were some of the operating systems popular at that time. Linus Torvalds made a clone of Unix with minimal features and called it linux and made it available free for development. Since then the development has grown at a very large level till now.

4. Various Linux distributions: (a).Debian - Large online repository of software packages, includes some free programs like Firefox browser etc. You can find it at https://www.debian.org/. Ubuntu is an operating system based on Debian.

(b). Fedora - Provides GNOME as default desktop environment and GNOME shell as default user interface. It uses RPM package management. You can find it at https://getfedora.org/. Red Hat linux is based on Fedora.
