Question

Need help as soon as possible with these questions they are based on lnux firewall on incoming and outgoing connections if someone could help me!

9. Explain the statement in Part 2 Step 10: "Note that the HTTP traffic from external virtual machines was re-directed to the internal Backtrack 5r3 virtual machine configured at the Windows 2008 Firewall." 10. What is the default setting for Windows based firewalls on outgoing traffic? 11. What is the default setting for Windows based firewalls on incoming traffic?

Explanation / Answer

Answer to Question 9

Consider a VM say abc hosting an application. Everybody on internet will access this appllication via HTTP. Now, whenever an external VM accesses this application the network traffic is routed to another VM that is Internal Backtrack 5r3 which is configured with windows 2008 firewall. There can be several reasons for doing that. One ovbious reason is that HTTP operates on port 80 and re-direction may be required to connect via HTTPS with port 443.

Answer to question 10

By Default on windows firewall all outbound traffic are allowed. These settings are normally controlled by Group Policy or an antivirus software ( if installed ). It is recommended to allow outbound traffic so that the installed applications can connect to remote serve to perform updates etc.

Answer 11

By default windows firewall doesn't allow incoming traffic which are not trusted. A firewall rule can be always created to allow specific incoming traffics.

For question 10 and 11 more can be explored by running Start->run and then type wf.msc and then on the left pane select Inbound and outbound rules.
