Question
The advent of computers, and applied software and systems has made it's way into the building industry. More and more we are seeing systems that are integrated and controlled by a main hub or central system. Structures that incorporate such advance systems are commonly referred to as "intelligent buildings."
1) What are the benefits and disadvantages of these advance systems in "intelligent buildings?
2) Do you believe these systems have placed additional stress on contractors and subcontractors?
3) Has the increase in the creation and availability of these computer software systems changed construction delivery systems and how?
Explanation / Answer
Answer)
The advent of computer and applied software and systems are nowadays even applied to the building industry where in we see systems that are integrated and controlled by a main hub or central system in a building. Thus these are known as "intelligent buildings" as they use computer technology.
1) The advantages of the "intelligent buildings" are that they provide Air quality control
having also higher levels of safety and security by using technologies
administration costs reduced
Better comfort
Better control over the infrastructure
Reducing the CO2 eliminations
The disadvantages are that:
Initial cost of the system setup is higher
Repairing problem is an issue
Electronic equipment has limited life and need expensive replacement
Expensive maintenance of electronics
Limitations of using technologies
2) Yes, these systems have placed additional stress on contractors and subcontractors as the people such as contractors and subcontractors who have worked on buildings all their life have to now know about the intelligent buildings and develop methodologies to design them and know about them. Thus it is new for them. Also customer demands for explicit intelligent building requirements are very problematic and requires more work than designing a conventional building with good features. The involvement of electronics makes the contractors and subcontractors more confused as to something they have no idea about and separate team handling all those.
3) Yes, increase in the creation and availability of these computer software systems have certainly changed construction delivery systems as no more just good and functional buildings are preferred. A network ready, connected and intelligent building with requisite control over it from a hub or central location is required. Thus delivery has changed of the buildings as constructions and also connection and making use of the latest electronics is a challenge in the intelligent buildings.
