1. GNU is a recursive acronym for "GNU's Not Unix!", i.e. G stands for GNU. N stands for Not. U stands for Unix; since GNU's design is Unix-like, but differs from Unix by being free software and containing no Unix code.

For the purpose of creating a free operating system; a mass collaborative initiative for the development of free software was conducted in 1978 by Richard Stallman and this project/initiative was named as 'GNU Project'. Here the freedom meant not only the cost of software but ability/flexibility of anyone who wishes to copy, run, redistribute, study and improve the software in general.
