Theory X & Theory Y

Theory X & Theory Y are the motivation theories which focuses on stimulating or motivating the staff or subordinates to follow and complete the stated actions and behaviors. People respond to these stimulations differently and management must choose an approach on how to motivate them.

Theory X is a traditional approach to motivation, which is based on age-old beliefs and on negative assumptions. It states that typically the workers or people dislike their work, they have very limited ambition and they will try to shirk responsibility and accountability. This theory paints a very negative picture of the employees and suggests handling them with hard and stiff measures.

On the other hand, Theory Y is completely opposite to theory X, which takes into consideration the scientific and modern approach to management and believes that all employees are self-motivated, honest and will do all the hard work to realize the organization’s goals and objectives.
