Question
1.5 Exercises 17 1.5 Exercises 1. W e transmit data directly between two servers 6,000 km apart through a geosta- tionary satellite situated 10,000 km from Earth exactly between the two servers. The data enters this network at 100 Mbls. (a) Find the propagation delay if data travels at the speed of light (2.3 x 108 m/s). (b) Find the number of bits in transit during the propagation delay. (c) Determine how long it takes to send 10 bytes of data and to receive 2.5 bytes of acknowledgment back. 2. Repeat exercise 1, but this time, suppose that the two servers are 60 meters apart n the same campus.Explanation / Answer
1 a. The actual distance the signal travels is 2 * (10000*10000+3000*3000)^0.5km. = 20880.613km.
The propagation delay is 20880613/230000000 = 0.09sec. This delay is just one way.
b. Number of bits in transit = 0.09 * 100*10^6 = 9078527
c. Time to send 10B data and recieve 2.5B ack = (10*8 +2.5*8)/10^8 + 2 * 0.09 = 0.000001 + 0.18 = 0.180001 sec.
2a. The effective distance is 20000km.
Propagation delay = 0.0870.
b. The number of bits in transit are 8695652
c. Time to send 10B data and recieve 2.5B ack = (10*8 +2.5*8)/10^8 + 2 * 0.0870 = 0.000001 + 0.174 = 0.174001 sec.
