Question
Significant benefit Walmart offers to its employees and customers:
Walmart promises to offer the best value for money to its customers. To support that tagline the company has to consistently carry out a lot of activities internally. The supply chain planning and network and its IT systems are its hallmarks and they perform exceedingly well. However, the company has also had to incur costs to achieve the present state of its operations. The cost of own supply chain infrastructure and initial capital costs relating its operations and the IT infrastructure have the costs of its success. It is also worth mentioning that the company is facing criticism and issues related to its workforce.
Since last year, Walmart started charging its vendors for warehousing and inventory. This move was viewed as something controversial. Some of the costs of doing business with Walmart include costs of adhering to product guidelines while selling at Walmart stores, for examples like barcodes and RFIDs, and more recently as mentioned above costs of inventory. Unsold finished inventory would pile up costs for the vendors.
Some of the benefits that Walmart offers include:
Economists at the Cato Institute say that Walmart is successful because it sells products that consumers want at low prices, satisfying customers' wants and needs. Walmart's critics say that Walmart's lower prices draw customers away from smaller Main Street businesses, hurting local small-town communities. Critics also say that Walmart is hurting the U.S. economy because of excessive reliance on Chinese products. Walmart is the largest importer in the U.S. in many categories such as electronics and fast-moving consumer good
In addition, researchers at the University of South Carolina and Sam Houston State University carried out a study to determine if Wal-Mart affects local crime rates. The results of the study found that the crime rate in US counties that have Wal-Mart stores declined at a much lower rate than the rest of the country.
This type of insurance is usually purchased to cover a company against financial loss when a high-ranking employee (i.e. management) dies and is usually known as "Key Man Insurance". Critics derided Walmart as buying what they called "Dead Peasants Insurance" or "Janitor Insurance." Critics, as well as the U.S. Internal Revenue Service, charge that the company was trying to profit from the deaths of its employees and take advantage of the tax law which allowed it to deduct the premiums.
