In the beginning the narrator is excited that she will be going to Washington DC. She starts to understand complicated world of racism through her journey.

The actions done by the black are shown to confined within a space unless the jar is seen to be broken. Rosewater and glycerin is used as universal examples of truth. This shows nature and its beauty and protection. It also shows glycerin as man made with side effects.
