Question

Section 1

Ans 1) the strengths that I have to build on that makes me a good leader is that I am good listener. as I am a good listener it helps to understand people’s problems better. Since, I am a good listener it helps me being sympathetic to the person and the situation as well. Another important trait is that I am a people’s person. I like to interact and talk to people. Understand their situations and help them cope with it. It is not necessarily about providing solutions, many times it also helps to just listen. People find answers to their problems on their own.

To be a leader in a nonprofit organization one has to be sympathetic and open to listening. Since, it is a nonprofit business one will have to generate money from other sources time and again and for that one has to be strong willed and good with understanding people.

Ans 2) I need to improve upon emotional control. I cannot be in a situation where emotional volatility leads to making an incorrect decision. A decision made in a state of extreme happiness, sadness or anger can have unfavorable results.

Ans 3) Relationship building can be done by activities within as well outside the office.

For instance, in the office irrespective of your designation you should make it a point to have lunch with the staff and share in with their work stories. They start feeling like you are one of their own and will be comfortable in sharing things with you which will lead to relationship building.

In case of outside the office try to be with them on their tea breaks and so on. But make sure it is not too much they should not feel like you are a burden. However, in short durations make sure to hang out with them during their tea breaks as well which will make it simpler for them to break the ice and be comfortable with you.

Ans 4) for conflict resolution I feel the important aspect that needs to be followed is talking. And when we do the talking we do not embark on a blame game or citing past misdeeds. For instance, it was the festive season and everyone wanted to be on leave. Since we have a 24*7 set up it is not possible for everyone to be on leave. At that time instead of telling people they cannot go on leave I said I will cover for some time and then someone else can take over so that people do not have to miss the festive season entirely and work also does not get affected.

Section 2

Ans 1) I was a part of the Accounts team in one of the large firms where there was a manager who lead with an iron hand. He was a disciplinarian. A brilliant individual but a very bad leader. The reason for that was he did not bat for the team. He was the first person to deride the team even in front of other department members. This left people unhappy and restless and on the verge of quitting their job.

After sometime he got transferred and another person took over who was the complete opposite. He was a true blue people’s person. When people went to him with problems or mistakes that they had committed he did not deride them but told them let us try and find a solution to this. He did not waste time in yelling and blaming his team but worked on getting the right solution. He is a perfect example of a good leader.

Section 3

Ans 1) my leadership philosophy is to be a people’s person. This way people want to be with you and talk to you and be loyal towards you. They feel that while talking to you their problems will get resolved. It will help them to focus and perform. In my current assignment I see that when people try to be official and keep things only on email the whole warmth within the team dissipates. I do understand that we should keep things official and in black and white but if we sit and talk face to face and resolve the issue and then just put the basic details and resolution in the mail it helps people. It saves the blushes and the issue gets resolved.
