Question
Logistics is usually the term used to define the overall flow of things from their place of origin o the point of consumption in order to meet customer requirements. Previously managing Logistics was a much simpler affair, where the primary focus was to simplify the labour intensive work. In factories and other product based businesses, the most important aspect of logistics was the manual loading efforts done by the industrial workers, hence logistics research was done on how to use mechanization to improve the very labour extensive work processes. Transportations on trucks rather than rails was introduced in the 1960s and with that the concept of 'Physical Distribution' emerged. Optimization of inventory, rail and truck routing, warehousing and many such factors came under the logistics management planning now.
In 1980s, a lot changed in the logistics management with the emergence of the personal computers. This provided a better computer access to the planners and a new geographical environment for planning. Technologies like flexible spreadsheets and map based interfaces enabled huge improvement in logistics planning. At the same it, 1980's witnessed a history for sector as this sector got the recognition for being very important, expensive and very complex.Company executives became more aware and now they were willing spend more money and employ trained professionals and new technologies.
The 1990s was the era of technological innovation. This changed the whole of Logistic Management. New terms like Supply Chain Management and Material Requirement Planning came into the picture during this time. The emergence of ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) fuelled the Logistics boom further. The companies which adapted the ERP systems suddenly were way ahead in logistics planning as they saw an improvement in the data availability and accuracy. This age of advanced computers motivated the Logistic Research Department to invest more and innovate full proof ways of Logistic Management.
