Question

Let's Assume that the Company/employer is a Watchmaker.

We do not have an Ergonomics and safety program in the written form in our company, i believe having such program should help us in achieving more productivity along with accuracy and reducing mishaps at the workplace. Ergonomics and safety is the process where the workers/employees are studied in their working environment, where the analysis would provide the better job profile for a worker on basis of his health condition, the main motive of such program is to reduce the risk of injury and discomfort.

As we are one of the pioneers of Watchmaking in the industry, we have a benchmark to follow, assembling the components on the wristwatch is a tedious task and requires a good eye and stable hands. Right now the assembling crew is a mix of all age groups hence the productivity is not that stable. Hence by introducing this program would have written guidelines to assign the particular set of employees to a particular section, for instance, wrist watch division would have young guns, whereas the other departments could use the help of elder employees this could be on a rotation basis. This would reduce fatigue of the employee, leading to higher productivity and accuracy.

The above would need HR personnel to assign the rosters, which would take a fraction of their daily time, the written program could be developed by Doctor, HR personnel, Managing partners in the span of one week. The cost of developing program would be negligible if compared to the outcome it would provide.

The program would help employees to work across the assembly along with the maximum time spent in their comfort zone on assembly, which would result in higher productivity and less fatigue. Plus there are many incidents which our industry experiences is of weak eyesight, this would be reduced as the workers would undertake dynamic jobs.

Explanation / Answer

In the absence of an ergonomic regulation, develop a proposal to your employer (or imaginary employer) as to why the company/division/agency/etc. should develop a written ergonomic program. Include in your proposal (1) information on the types of tasks or hazards that would be covered by the program, (2) potential resources (time, personnel, money, equipment) necessary to develop the program, and (3) anticipated changes that might occur as a result of the implementation of the program. The proposal should be long enough to convince your employer that a written program is necessary, but short enough to not lose their interest.
