Question

Ethical Decision-Making

Problem

Consider for the three-step approach for ethical decision making in light of the following problem.

As students, faculty, and staff of the university , we are given access to resources (email, computing resources, printers, etc.) to use accordingly. While passing by the printer room in the IT building, you see a somebody who looked like a student next to the copy machine making copies. Obviously, you think this person may be doing something wrong.

Analyze this problem according to the following 3 steps.

Explanation / Answer

In printer room one guy looked like student making copies. But I have to first confirm that who is that guy either student or faculty or staff. Because in printer room only authorised people are allowed. I will first confirm their role and what is he printing.

I will check whether he is copying authorised content. I will call IT support team for confirmation for that. If he is student then he is restricted to copying to only study materials. If he is faculty then he is allowed to copies question paper. If he is staff then he is restricted to copying official authorised document.

If I found anything wrong then I will report this situation with respective team as soon as possible.
