Question

Answer: The six cultural dimensions described by Hofstede represent the six broad characteristics which are shown by the individuals from a particular nationality. These six dimensions represent the six broad social values of the society present in the respective countries. These dimensions impact on the approach of people towards work and their behaviours at the workplace. As these dimensions directly impact on the attitudes and behaviours of the individuals hence it also has an impact on the relationship between the leaders and their followers. Like if the Power distant score of the followers is low they will prefer that their leader treats them as equal. Similarly the followers having a high score on individuality will be motivated by their personal interests rather than the interests of the group. Therefore understanding these dimensions becomes very important for the leaders in order to create a co ordination between themselves and their followers. It is important that the leaders should understand these differences and adapt themselves as per the situation. The contingency theory of leadership advocates that the leaders need to adapt themselves as per the situation in order to lead effectively.

Explanation / Answer

Depending on the culture, adaptability may be considered a virtue or a weakness.  For example, leaders in certain cultures are expected to stick to their guns, regardless of the circumstances.  For other cultures, adaptability and compromise are highly valued.  Such is the case in Vietnamese culture.  A saying Vietnamese subscribe to states, “The supple bending reed survives storms which break the strong but unyielding oak.” Research and examine Hofstede’s six cultural dimensions.  As a leader, why is it important to recognize and understand how the relationship between leaders and followers may be affected by each of these dimensions?  Is the onus on leaders and/or followers to adapt?
