Question

Problem 1 Computer cooling is required to remove the waste heat produced by computer components, to keep components within permissible operating temperature limits. Components that are susceptible to temporary malfunction or permanent failure if overheated include integrated circuits such as Central processing units CPUs), chipset, graphics cards, and hard disk drives. Cooling may be designed to reduce the ambient temperature within the case of a computer, such as by exhausting hot air, or to cool a single component or small area (spot cooling). Components commonly individually cooled include the CPU, Graphics processing unit (GPU) and the northbridge. Compare different techniques used to cool desktop computers in a Caribbean environment using a thermodynamic analysis. Get basic calculations of each technique.

Explanation / Answer

Specifically, the heat generated in a desktop or laptop depends on its model, hardware, manufacturer, version and

the applications running on it.

Overheating can be caused due various reasons like internal dusts, high performance tasks like high graphics video

games, faulty coolants or improper functioning of exhaust fans inside it.

The different methods to cool down the desktop or laptop are:

Proper Air Flow:

Adequate amount of air flow is necessary for proper working of the PC. Its vents must not be blocked at any time,

due to which he heat which should be released in near around surroundings remains inside the PC and becomes

reason for overheating.

Use fans with proper dimensions:

Small fans sometimes are not able to take out the required amount of heat out of the system, so fans with

appropriate dimensions are required.

120 mm or plus case fans are often preferred and are greatly helpful in getting out the heat from the PC.

Purchase a good CPU cooler:

Sometimes, the default cooler that comes up with the PC is not proper or when we buy cheap PC.

In this case, we should purchase anew decent heatsink and fan combo which nearly comes in $35-$45.

The multi-socket compatibility should also be taken care of.

One of the example of these coolers is Cooler Master Hyper 615v2.

Water Cooling:

It is one of the best method of cooling. They are easy to fit, compact, zero maintenance and highly effective.

This costs around $55-$65 for a decent single-fan water cooler. These generally have 120mm radiator with them.

This is one of the standard size, if you want to buy one for yourself, you have to check the compatibility with your

case, so that there are no issues of fittings and space.

Most of the PCs works fine through 90% humidity and 30 degree Celsius temperature if provided with proper space

for ventilation.

Core Temp tool can be used to monitor computer's temperature and other advanced tool like HWMonitor can also

be used.

The ideal temperature at which most people try to keep temperature of the PC is below 40C at idle and below 55C

at high performance.
