Question
You have a 32 GB flash drive that contains 20,000,000,000 bytes of pictures.
You would like to give a friend a copy of those pictures; you could either drive the
flash driveover to their house or have them copy it over the Internet. Your friend's download speed is
100 Mbps and your upload speed is 20 Mbps. Determine the following:
(a) How long would it take you to transfer the pictures over the Internet directly to your
friend?
(b) At what distance would it be faster to drive the
ash drive over to your friend's house
and copy the les to their computer, assuming you drive at an average speed of 100
km/h and the USB transfer speed to their hard drive is an average of 200 Mbps?
Explanation / Answer
20,000,000,000 is the equivalent of 20 GB.
20 Mb/s = 20/8 MB/s
my friend can download at 100/8 MBps but his download speed is limited by my upload speed which is 20/8 MBps.
Therefore , he can download at 20/8 MBps.
a)
20 GB = 20 X 103 MB
20 X 103 MB = 8 X 103 sec = 2.22 hours
20/8 MBps
It'll take 2.22 hours to transfer the pictures over the internet. = 2 hours and 12 minutes.
b)
200 Mbps = 200/8 MBps
20 X 103 MB = 800 sec = 15 minutes
200/8 MBps
15 minutes + however long it takes to drive and get there.
At 100 Kmph , if we drive for 1 hours 57 minutes (2 hours 12 minutes - 15 minutes) we will reach 195 Km.
So it'll be faster to drive the flash drive there and copy the contents via USB if the friends house is nearer than 195KM.
