Question

For each of the following statements, discuss whether you agree or disagree with the statement. Briefly (in 2-3 sentences) justify your position.

1. Today, privacy is often breached due to the availability of our personal information online. One possibility is to hide the true information among other “false” information. Thus, we could ourselves put up misinformation regarding ourselves online to hide the real personal details. This is a good solution with no downside.

2. To guarantee privacy in mobile settings, it is sufficient to anonymize only the current location of the user.

3. We can solve the privacy/security problems associated with RFID by utilizing complex cryptographic protocols for authentication and access control.

4. Using advanced search operators on Google (or other search engines), you can find new information, that you would not see otherwise.

Explanation / Answer

1. This is not a solution at all. Suppose you went to a place for dinner and posted it online. So people got to know that you were at so and so location on a specific day at a specific time. Now if you post wrong information instead, this simply adversely affects your credibility.

2. Not at all. Suppose you have an app that has access to your contact list. There is another app that has access to your internet. Now it could well be possible to design and deploy a covert piece of code that leaks your contact list to a third party via internet.

3. Privacy concerns associated with RFID are difficult to tackle. It is possible to track an individual's movement if he or she is carrying a RFID chip thus causing an invasion of privacy. This can hardly be prevented using any cryptgraphic protocols for authentication or access control.

4. Technically yes. Advanced search leads to a better search experience because it filters more specific information due to the application of more filter parameters by the user. Thus the ranking order of the webpages change favorably for the user.
