Question

Bill was healthy for the first 10 months of his life, but after that he began to experience severe health problems. After several tests it was discovered that he had a deficiency in B cells.

What kind of test can they run to arrive at the conclusion above?

What kind of health issues is Bill predisposed to?

In the flow cytometry profile box below use cluster of dots to show the profile that would be observed for a normal individual and for Bill if lymphocytes were stained and analyzed for CD3 and CD19.

Explanation / Answer

only B cell defiency can be of the following types:

X linked agammaglobulinemia (bruton's syndrome), common variable immunodeficiency or selective IgA antibody syndrome.

testing methods are as follows:

blood serum antibody levels for IgG, IgA, IgM.

also, we can evaluate antibody antigen complexes in response to a particular antigen.

and we can also use flow cytometry as mentioned below.

normal individual would show the presence of both markers CD19 as well as CD3

however, bills lymphocyte would show the presence of only CD3 which is present on Tcells and will not show CD19 as it it present on mature B cells.
