Question
Emerson Process Management, a global supplier of measurement, analytical, and monitoring instruments and services based in Austin, Texas, had a new data warehouse designed for analyzing customer activity to improve service and marketing. However, the data warehouse was full of inaccurate and redundant data. The data in the warehouse came from numerous transaction processing systems in Europe, Asia, and other locations around the world. The team that designed the warehouse had assumed that sales groups in all these areas would enter customer names and addresses the same way. In fact, companies in different countries were using multiple ways of entering quotes, billing, shipping, and other data.
Assess the potential business impact of these data quality problems.
Copy the following questions and respond by writing, at a minimum, one or two well-developed paragraphs for each question. Be sure to cite the text to support your responses by integrating evidence through quotations, paraphrases, or summaries.

Explanation / Answer
Answer:
This is a known fact that data can only turned into information when it is in a form which can be used for analysis, if the data which is received from different sources is in different form it becomes nearly impossible to arrange it and extract information out of it.
Since Emerson Process Management has designed the data warehousing and recording in a faulty way the data processing task is impossible and all the efforts done for it becomes useless, the recording of data should have been in a same format regardless of location or difference of culture within people who are employed to record it.
The redundancy in data increases cost which is incurred to collect the data, since the data which is collected is not even providing meaningful information every penny used here becomes worthless.
The assumption that the people located in different countries will record data in the same format was faulty is the root of all the problems at Emerson Process Management.
Even the transaction processing system was different at different locations so it was not expected in the very beginning that it will have any meaningful impact on the business.
These data quality problems will ultimately impact the total performance of the business, since the data which is collected is mainly for the purpose to frame marketing strategies and here when we are unable to find any meaningful information we can’t frame marketing policies and even if we frame it will be faulty.
These data quality problems will impact the business negatively and it will be tough for the decision makers to take any decisions or frame any policy relying on this data.
The steps which should be taken to reach a solution are:
In today’s modern world every business decision is taken on the basis of data and the information obtained from it, it forms the base, if this base becomes faulty the whole business comes under question and sustainability becomes difficult so in order to overcome this shortcomings the above mentioned decisions should be implemented.
