The sophisticated business application software you need for your business normally sells for 2,900 renminbi (around $350) at computer stores in Shanghai. But with an income of a little more than $5,000 a year, you cannot afford to buy the original graphics software for your business. A friend has told you she can get you all the software you need, and more, at a nearby street market for only $40. Because very few people buy official software, you know the authorities will not punish you if you are caught. Is it unethical for you to purchase the pirated software? Its unethical to buy the pirated software even if no one is going to check. Intellectual property will only be created in the market when people buy the products.If everyone starts using pirated, there will be no incentive for a developer to develop products in future. This is unethical at many levels: Denying someone their fruits of labour, cheat and deceitful behaviour- all are unethical conducts.
