Question
You supervisor at work calls you into the office and presents the following to you:
There is a need for a safety supervisor at your company, a position that did not previously exist, and the company is concerned they are losing money due to not having a person in this position.
Your supervisor tells you that you will still be responsible for 50% of you current job duties and your salary (hourly pay) will not increase. However, starting at the end of the next full quarter, and on each successive quarter, they will give you a bonus of 10% of your salary if you can demonstrate a positive impact of your actions as safety director (this is a good deal). They will gladly send you to additional training and provide learning opportunities and some (read limited) financial resources for you.
Before you leave his office to go home ad ponder this opportunity, your supervisor tell you that he believes that the real problems are caused by the 'bad apples' that keep making mistakes, and unless you convince him differently, will have to terminate these people.
Once home, you search the Web for some resources to help your case. You find this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gKqYMpWZbV8 (You searched YouTube for "Sidney Dekker On Just Culture").
Will you accept the position? If your answer is....
yes: your supervisor asks you to list 5 to 7 reasons why you chose to accept. You also need to address his belief about 'bad apples' and you must provide reasons why firing people is not the right action.
no: your supervisor asks you to list 5 to 7 reasons why not. Even though you are not going to take the position, you must fight for you fellow employees and provide reasons why firing people is not the action to improve safety.
Explanation / Answer
Yes I would accept this position for the following reason:
Firing "bad apples" is not the most appreciated decision because:
After firing them new employees must be need which would required hiring cost, training cost, etc. Which would be another extra cost over company
We can give those people good training where there are lacking and making mistakes. Training would help them to to thier work worth more efficiently and avoiding mistake.
Giving them reward on bases of thier work can be another option to motivate the employees so that they work more properly.
A common standards PR policy should be set for incentive and reward which would help to get work quality and quantity in both ways.
