Allio Allio Associates LLC, Providence, Rhode Island, USA Abstract Purpose The purpose of this article is to elucidate the limitations of contemporary approaches to developing leaders and to present alternative approaches. Design/methodology/approach This paper offers a review and critique of the assumptions on which current leadership programs are based. Findings -Most leadership training initiatives fail to produce leaders. Typical programs teach leadership theory, concepts, and principles; they promote leadership literacy but not leadership competence. Paradoxically, however, while leadership cannot be taught, leadership can be learmed. Men and women become leaders by practice, by performing deliberate acts of leadership. The primary role of a good leader (one who is competent and ethical) is to establish and reinforce values and purpose, develop vision and strategy, build community, and initiate appropriate organizational change. This behavior requires character, creativity, and compassion, core traits that cannot be acquired cognitively, Practical implications For those charged with the responsibility of developing leaders, the three necessary steps are to select the right candidates, create learning challenges, and provide mentoring. Those who seek to develop effective leadership training programs must first establish a metric for assessing leadership effectiveness. They must then design experiments that can establish a causal or statistically significant relationship between training initiatives and leadership competency. Evidence suggests that the most effective leadership programs wil focus on building self-knowledge and skills in rhetoric and critical thinking Originality/value This paper challenges the utility of most leadership training. Leadership cannot be taught, although potential leaders can be educated. In this article author wants to highlight teaching and learning limitations involve in leadership development regarding cognitive quality.
To explain this - Cognition is time consuming process, to recognize its just like clearing every doubt whatever arose in student mind. When student become satisfied and accept that what ever teacher is teaching is fact. To get more clear understanding about is language barrier. To explain this after repetitive warnings from teacher, if student neglect to do home work, then teacher has to change his word language to physical punishment. Thus role of words which get use is just like vehicle to communicate message & regulate behavior. Now if some on not responding to message then there may be number of factors. And due to time limitation its impossible to develop cognitive seance, that is cognitive seance limits the intellectual, beyond this seance person either fail to understand message & ready for punishment. Also spiritual schooler accept that knowledge is already exist & no one can teach externally we just need to discover by removing unwanted thing. Its just like removing unwanted material from a stone to turn it to statue.If person develop his contingence then its Ok but ultimate freedom is available to him or not again leads to new discussion.
Where as character, creativity & compassion are core factor for leadership.
Character is whatever person choose he become. Its similar good input must result in good output may be thought process.
Creativity is entrepreneurial approach which result in joy, pleasure, hel,support, developing advance technique for competitive benefits.
compassion is core value for quality, safety, unavoidable & compulsory activity like inhalation without which survival of person is not possible.
Hence quoted statement is practical rather than theoretical.
