Question

Nonverbal Communication Activity

Find a public location where you can safely observe two or more strangers interacting from a distance where you cannot hear what they are saying. You might be able to hear the tonality and pitch of their voices but not the actual words. Spend at least 10 minutes observing the same individuals. Make careful notes about their nonverbal communication, keeping in mind what you have learned from other resources. Use your notes and observations to draw conclusions and respond to the questions below.

1. Who are you observing, including the number of subjects, their estimated ages, and other characteristics of note?

2. Where and when did your observations take place?

3. What is your best guess of their relationship: professional colleagues, married couple, best friends, blind daters? Define the relationship, the emotional state of each, the attitude or feelings toward the other(s).

4. Describe the nonverbal communication between them. Include factors such as distance and position in relation to each other, gestures, any touching between them, etc. This may include interaction with their environment or other people outside the pair or group you are observing.

5. Can you draw any conclusions about the culture or other characteristics of the individuals that were not evident before your observation?

6.How do your findings add to the understanding of human communication?

Please answer all of the questions, if you can not answer all of the questions do not reply.

Explanation / Answer

1.

I am observing group of 3 youngsters at a Tea Shop aged around 22-25 years and with casual dressing makes them college students with college bags beside them.

2.

I Observed them during a Tea Break during my office hours.

3.

They are friends fromt the same college as their bags were of same name of college and showcases good bonding between them just like other friends have e.g. caring, laughing, joking etc.

4.

The non-verbal communication looked like they were talking about any girl and describining her charateristics through gesturs, postures, hand movements, facial expressions, etc. They wanted other friends to see them properly so maintained proper distance from each other but not to far and also giving high-five every now and then. They were also having calls during the calls, reading messages on their phones. Also in between ordering tea & snacks from the shop, but shopkeeper was busy doing his job rather than focusing on the group. They even offered tea to two poor childs with biscuits as well.

While at earlier stage they just looked normal college guys, later their caring nature came out and perpective about the students changed from my mind. I had perpective of naughty, funny students but later they were caring and happy students to me.
