Question
In Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, he describes a world where prisoners live chained in a cave. The puppeteers cast shadows on the wall and these shadows construct reality for the prisoners. One of the prisoners breaks free and leaves the cave. At first, he is blinded by the sun and apprehensive about the new world. The shadows in the cave had always seemed so real to him. After he has spent some time in this new world, he realizes that his entire existence has been controlled by others and he now knows the truth. Thousands of years later, is this allegory relevant to our lives today? Do we live in a cave where reality is constructed by someone else? Conversely, is this allegory outdated? Has the internet, public education, and improvements in transportation metaphorically killed the puppeteer? Is our world more transparent than it ever has been?
why did falk not think that a person who was taught that she should not lie because if she did others would not trust her would not have been given a moral reason?(ethic)
Explanation / Answer
This allegory still applies to our world today. We are held down by media, government, technologies, and most importantly by INTERNET.there is always someone above us in all walks of life. When we are child,we are almost driven by our parents choices and opinions. We are not allowed to think or apply logics of our own till we become adults. When we are adult,we are subjected to an unending world of internet, where information,(right or wrong) keeps on loading on our minds and this information overload limits our capacity of thinking and reasoning. Also,we are so burdened by our responsibilities that we are ready to sacrifice our thinking power to the mentalities of our employers or bosses in order to chase money.
In allegory of cave, plato explains that people are oblivious to the truth and when one finally sees the truth, others would not believe this thing.People are living in an environment where they beleive what they see rather than understanding or finding the truth behind it.Although the allegory has been written a long time back, but it still applies to the modern world. However in recent time there are more ways or options to reach the truth but the confusion grows as the no. of options grows. In the case of religion also, people keep on adding new segments, new gods, new rituals and bind them to their societies. The coming generations are bpund to follow that and they are deprived of the ir real self.
Conclusion: Each day in 21st century,we as a society are presented with numerous images through various forms of media. With so many images present,it becomes a dauntingb task to find out which one is right. We as prisoners are chained to gadgets, which are bound to beleive whatever is presented to us in the from of gadgets.
