Question
1. What is the most cost-effective allocation of the parts to the press machines? 2. How does the optimal solution compare with the current allocation? 3. What costs, other than the shot and shift costs, are involved? 4. Can other types of data help refine the decision? 5. Can standardization help control certain costs related to this case? 6. While implementing the cost effective model, what considerations and cautions are relevant to the human relations in the stamping shop? All the necessary calculations have to be made in excel. However, you have to transfer the tables in excel, where you will also explicitly explain the methodology and the variables used. 9B16D022 EXHIBIT 1: AVERAGE CHANGEOVER TIME IN PRESS MACHINES Changeover Shift cost Shot cost M1 M2 M3 M4 M5 M6 time (sec)(USS) 15.00 15.00 15.00 5.00 15.00 15.00 1.125 4,500 1.425 ,075 ,075 1,500 (US$) 0.29 0.65 0.52 0.39 0.39 0.58 Source: Created by the authors EXHIBIT 2: THE STAMPING PROCESS Steel coil from supplier Flat product blank Body panel SHEARING STAMPING Source: Created by the authors
Explanation / Answer
1. What is the most cost-effective allocation of the parts to the press machines?
Answer -
Press Machine uses to make press parts in which the parts are made into the shape by pressing a high load jaw over the raw material in the required shape. Hence in one press operation the raw material is cut down in the required shape and the part is ready. If required further press operations can be carried out with required shapes.
Most Cost Effective Allocation of Parts - Since the machine perform the press operation over the part in one shot, so it is best to use the maximum material , so that the wastegate cane be avoided. So the parts shoudl be supplied in with a area which is equal to single or multiple of parts area , so that either single or multiple parts can be made by the press machine in one go and at the same time the wastegate of parts are avoided. Because if some portion of material is left, then this material can not be re-used in the press operation. So most cost effective way is to provide the required area of the parts so that press operation can be done in one go and wastage can be avoided.
Other way is to provide the parts with same setup in one go so that we do not needs to do the set up change again again in the presss machine ,as the set up change time in press machine is very large and it will take of lot of time of production. So effective way is to perform the similar type ofoperations in one go.
