Question

17. You are a member of the Human Resources Department of a three-year-old software manufacturer that has several products and annual revenue in excess of $500 million. You've just received a request from the manager of software development to hire three notorious crackers to probe your company's software products in an attempt to identify any vulnerabilities. The reasoning is that if anyone could find a vulnerability in your software, they could. This will give your firm a head start on developing patches to fix the problems before anyone can exploit them. You're not sure, and you feel uneasy about hiring people with criminal records and connections to unsavory members of the hacker/ cracker community. What would you do?

Explanation / Answer

17.

As a responsible human resource manager, once I receive the request from the manager of the software development regarding hiring of resources with questionable credentials, I will try and vet the request from our internal legal team. I will also try and understand the legal ramifications for going ahead with this sort of hiring and the potential liabilities for the firm in such cases. In case the legal team give a clearance on the same, will we proceed with the hiring.

As an ethical employee and salesperson, I will not hold back the potential sales or roll it over to the next quarter. Instead I will register the transaction and also send a memo to my superiors and the HR team citing examples and past trends wherein the sales have been historically low in the coming quarter. I will also request them to evaluate my performance on a consolidated basis i.e. sales figures for both quarters to be combined and not look at quarterly performance in isolation.
