Question

You are to select a Linux Distribution to run on your home system. This system is to be your primary computer system for you home and school needs. Briefly explain what your needs are and why you selected the hardware and distribution you selected. Your discussion should include:

(1) determine what hardware you are going to use for this project.

(2) determined your needs (needs assessent)

(3) select a Linux distribution that meets the needs

(4) select a file system

(5) plan your partitions

(6) select software packages for needs not supported by the basic package installation

Explanation / Answer

1)I use hardware like CPU ( cores),memory , harddisk , OS updated version

2)The needs must be as follows

3) They are some light weights Linux distributions like Arch Linux , Puppy Linux , Trisquel Linux etc.... In these I choose Arch Linux. Because

Arch itself is bare minimum distro, there won't be any bloat that comes with some distributions. There are many lightweight DEs avilable forArch Linux;infact,i would be surprised if a particular DE was not available for Arch. Some of the lightweight DEs suitable for Arch include i3,MATE,LXDE,OpenBox etc

You can easily install multiple DEs on Arch to see which one works the best on your hardware. However,to keep your system optimized, remove what you dont use and keep only whats going to run on your system.

4) I use a distributed file system .Here there will be two filesystems whchi can make better choice. Those are Couch DB and Hadoop.

a) CouchDB doesnot actually have any distribution features builtin, to my knowledge the glue to automatically distribute entries or even whole databases is simply missing

b)Hadoop seems to be very widely used.Atleast it gets good press, but still has a single point of failure:The NameNode .

In these file systems which can satisfy the following thing that will be the better one. Those rules are

5)Each distribution guide contains a section on paartioting .Personally i favor the KISS principle(Keep It Simple,Stupid),If you are installing a server that will serve multiple users simultaneously

You need one partition that will be used as LINUX swap space. This is space on your haard drive that can be used as virtual memory.Virtual memory allows yours computer to run laarge programs and performs complex tasks even if does not have enough physical RAM to do the job.

ROOT file system is represented by forward slash(/).It is the top of the directory tree and contains Linux and everything that you install with LinuxThis is roughly equivalent to C drive under DOS or Windows

The third partition is /home directoryThis is the place where all user specific files your data in other words are stored.

6)The important package formate is DEB,stands for Debian. Debian packages and the APT(Advanced Packagin Tool) has made advanced features that are now commonly used like automatic dependency resolution and signed packages.Debian packages are used by Debian/Linux and some of the most used Linux distribution like Ubuntu,Linux Mint,Mepic etc.
