FLOW LAYOUT : the flow layout is used to arrange the components in a line one after the other. Its the default layout of applet or panel.

GRID LAYOUT: the grid layout is used to arrange the components in a rectangular grid. One component is displayed in each rectangle.

BORDER LAYOUT :the border layout is used to arrange the components in a five regions , north ,south,east,west and center.its the deafault lauout for frame and window.

GRIDBAG LAYOUT : the gridbag layout arrenges the components in horizontal and vertical manner.its one of the most flexible and complex layout managers.

ABSOLUTE POSITIONING:

A layout manager makes it easier to adjust to look-and-feel-dependent component appearances, to different font sizes, to a container's changing size, and to different locales. Layout managers also can be reused easily by other containers, as well as other programs.
