Question

Movie posters are perhaps the most challenging and innovative area of design right now.

Please post links to 3 movie posters that you believe show excellent examples of visual hierarchy and composition.

For each movie poster example, answer these questions:
1. What is the most important element in the design and how does the designer make you pay attention to that element?
2. Where do you look first when you look at this poster? Why?
3. How is the 'rule of thirds' used in this poster?

Also, discuss the use of color and texture in the poster.

(All you have to do is answer the third question because the first and second on is probably already answered and I am only allowed one question at a time)

Explanation / Answer

1. The basic concept of the rule of thirds is to conciously place your subject matter in and around a 3x3 grid that forms 9 perpindicular squares (ooh perpindicular!) This gives ambience to the piece but also gives the designer more control over their work.

2. If you’re finding it hard to comprehend what i’m saying so far here’s a visual example to make to compensate for my poor excuse for a vocabulary. The poster shown in below.

3. When creating the poster for our film it is important to understand compositional techniques that would be effective in making the poster memorable and, essentially, sell the film.

4. The rule of thirds is used in visual arts such as photography, art and design that divides an image into nine equal sections- two equally spaced horizontal lines and two equally spaced vertical lines. The subject of the image or compositional elements should be placed within these intersections or along the line.

5. It is believed that following the rule of thirds is more effective in creating energy and interest to an image and placing the subject/s of the image within the nine sections than just typically centering the subject. The image on the right uses the rule of thirds in photography. I put the grid of two horizontal and vertical lines, creating nine equal sections, on top of the image to show how the rule can be applied to this image.

6. The puppy's body is in alignment with the second horizontal line and the head and lower body are both aligned with the two vertical lines. The poster is shown in below.
