Question
Electric car or "hybrid" car is considered a clean alternative to car powered by internal combustion engine (gasoline or diesel). Tesla company (https://www.tesla.com/) is in the forefront of making electric car. The cleanness of electric car is based on the exhausting pipe of the car. A gasoline car emit CO2 but an electric car does not. Model 3 is the newest Tesla electric car in the market. Please go online to obtain energy efficiency information on Model 3 and a comparable Toyota car. Then conduct the following assessment: if the electricity supply of Model 3 is entirely comes from a coal-powered electricity generator, which car is cleaner in terms of CO2 emission? Please should your source and your work before presenting the conclusions.Explanation / Answer
--
Tesla electric car co2 emission level: This is less than 120 g per km
But at the production site, to make a 100 kWh battery it emits 17.5 tons of CO2. The same amount of CO2 would be emitted only when you drive a car with an internal combustion engine for 9 years.
But then there is also carbon getting emitted while transporting gas to each and every petrol or fuel stations and keeping ready for filling the tanks of the car.
We can compare the Tesla S P 100 D model against the Toyota similar capacity vehicle:
The Toyota car emits around 6.2 metric tons of CO2 every year when run on gas assuming that they run it for around 14,700 miles per annum; In addition add another 1.1 tons for the fuel pumps; Totaling 7.3 tons per annum;
The 17.5 tons emitted while making the battery will get nullified within 3 years, as 17.5/7.3 = 2.4 that is less than 2 and a half years
So Tesla cars are better in terms of CO2 emission control and the Tesla cars are cleaner in terms of CO2 emission;
