Question
1000 households were surveyed 275 households own a desktop computer, 455 households own a DVD player, 405 household own two cars 145 household own a desktop computer and DVD player,195 household own a DVD player and two cars, 110 household own two cars and a desktop computer, 265 household do not own a desktop computer, do not own a DVD player, do not own two cars, Find the number of households that own A) a desktop computer, DVD player and two cars B) only a DVD player C) a desktop computer, DVD player but do not own two carsExplanation / Answer
Definitely a math problem, not comp sci, but whatever. So we know there are 265 people who own no items, so total people who own atleast one thing is 735. If we draw a ven-diagram this helps out a lot to get the information you need. Knowing a little mathematics we know: total=2 car+Comp+dvd - 2car & comp - 2car & dvd - dvd & comp + 2car&comp&dvd. So if we plug in we see we only have 2car&comp&dvd as a variable, so 735=275+455+405-110-145-195+2car&comp&dvd solving we get 2car&comp&dvd=47. Then filling out a vendiagram knowing what our center is we find that only dvd =162 and comp&dvd=98. Really the hardest part of this is finding out how many own all 3, the rest is just filling it out.
