Managing a project without governance can be challenging. Think back to a project with which you were involved, either in the work place or at school. Was the leader effective? What steps did he/she take that helped him/her to be effective and help the project succeed? Were there any skills discussed in this unit that the project manager did not have? As a project manager, would you prefer to work in a Program Management Office (PMO) environment? Why or why not? Please share your thoughts on this. Here is an example which may provide a few insights to the given questions:

When a new Program/ Project Manager joins the project and he/ she observes various deficiencies related to the basics of program governance. At the same time, his/her predecessor had been highly technical with good experience in this area, but the customer was still dissatisfied . Hence, this new PM formulated some basic questions that covered the major components of project and program governance such as,

·         Clarify the existing governance model, what are the gaps and currently working?

·         How to engage Stakeholders and how to communicate status updates, risks and changes?

·         What are Stakeholder Expectations to success for the project/program?

·         What are current Roles and Responsibilities and accountable for?

·         How to assess risk? What are the key challenges and how are they communicated and addressed?

· Important meetings to chair and participate in? Which reports to be generated?

· Tracking mechanism for the PMP plan and project charter ?

· Which important metrics to be tracked and published?

Asking these questions enabled the new PM to form the baseline governance framework. Hence, able to understand stakeholder engagement and communication. After putting the governance framework, it was challenged for new PM to execute. Hence, planned a meeting structure and a communication plan helped. With this communication plan, the new PM was able to address changes and issues to the team. And this helped in the long term. Hence, the following are key benefits of project governance: accountability; Clear roles and responsibility ; Easy Issue management and resolution; and clear communication.

The probable reasons to work in a PMO environment such as PMO provides long-term advantages to the business; PMO aligns with corporate strategy to achieve goals and objectives ; PMO publish the balanced scorecard by integrating the required data; PMO enables Knowledge management at enterprise level; PMO provided standard guidlines and templates to manage projects and also provides time to time trainings to employees .
