Question
You are the managers of the Powhatan Power Plant on the Floofensoffle River. The river has become infested with the Asiatic Claro a small but prolific organism that favors the environment inside of the water-cooling intake pipes of the power plant. When they become sufficiently populous, they significantly restrict the flow of water into the plant, which is needed both to produce steam and to cool various systems. There is clam poison that can be used to control these organisms that you have used before. It very effectively both kills the clams and loosens their anchors so they can be reamed out of the pipes. This time however, something seems to have gone awry. The chemical, which is toxic to humans and just about everything else, has been found in the river for ten miles downstream. Virtually all of the riverside communities get their drinking water from the river and all have been advised not to drink, bathe in, wash clothes with, cook with, or in any other way contact the water for the next two weeks while the toxin exits the systems. The communities are being served by water trucked in using the tanker trucks known as "water buffaloes."There is a remote possibility that some other industry released the toxin, but the timing certainly points to you. The simple circumstance of having the incorrect flow direction at the time of application could explain the release. Nearly everyone affected by the water problem uses your power. Angry customers are uncooperative customers. This can be a public relations nightmare. You must create a brief outline of public remarks for tomorrow to calm the local population and get back their good will. You must also be aware of the possibility of lawsuits if you are culpable.

Explanation / Answer
The following three would be the main point of focus in the Thesis related to the above case:
1. To determine how to get through the litigation process successfully especially if it is proven that our Company was solely responsible for the toxic release into the river.
2. Evaluation of various alternatives to deal with the havoc caused by the Organisms called Asiatic Claro.
3. To ensure the ways to calm the local population and restoring the image of our Company.
*3 Potential supporting materials:
1. The Pollution Prevention Act of 1990 and the role of the Environmental Pollution Agency in it (Purpose: To find the ways to escape the litigation process)
2. The NYIS info on Asiatic clam (Purpose: To find the alternate ways and cure for the Asiatic clam organisms)
3. Various articles on Corporate Social Responsibility such as Unilever adopting four riverside communities or villages in the year 2001 (Purpose: To undertake CSR activity to make good for the loss or damaged caused to the riverside communities and to create a favorable image once again on their minds)
