Question

Given the following table of 5 numeric values (listed both in hexadecimal and 8-bit binary representation). Answer the questions below, using the ID to identify th enumber you wish to specify as the correct answer.
ID first row -----------Hex--------------------Binary
NUM1-----------------FF---------------------1111 1111
NUM2-----------------07---------------------0000 0111
NUM3-----------------F8---------------------1111 1000
NUM4-----------------87---------------------1000 0111
NUM5-----------------80---------------------1000 0000

a) Suppose Num3 is interpreted as a 1's complement number. Which of the above numbers corresponds to the signed-magnitude representation of the same number?

b) Which of the above 5 numbers is the smallest signed magnitude number?

Explanation / Answer

a. The absolute value of NUM3 (without the sign) is: 0000 0111 or 7. (Simply invert the bits for a 1's complement number.) This corresponds to NUM4.

b. The smallest signed magnitude is the negative number with the largest absolute value for the 7 right-most digits. This is of course NUM1, which is -127 in signed magnitude.
