Question

YOU INTERNED AT AN ACCOUNTING FERM It's time to think, reflect and take stock as things wind down.  Think back to your objectives and expectations.  Essentially, was the internship what you thought it would be?  Think about your experiences and what you learned.  You might look at how your job changed over the weeks, if you progressed as an employee and/or as part of the organizational team, and if you developed in your intern role.  Whether you are excited or saddened to be ending your internship, you have experienced valuable lessons.

Your reflection summary must be a minimum of three (3) FULL pages typed with separate cover page, Times New Roman, 12-size font. The paper can NOT be a Q&A paper, but must be written in summary format.

How do you feel about this being your last week on the job?  Would you like to continue working at this company?  Explain.

Have you completed all your assignments and projects?  If not, how are you planning to address the situation?

Did you achieve the learning objectives you created at the beginning of the semester? Explain.

Is there any other business that you need to address before leaving?

Can you step back and remember who really helped you learn your responsibilities? Explain.  Did it follow the formal structure of the company, or was it an informal structure?

Have you progressed as an employee?  Explain.

Have you progressed as a member of the organization’s team?  Explain.

Have you experienced personal and/or professional growth over the 10 weeks?

Have you considered what you will write in your letter of thanks to the organization?  Can you provide an example, such as a lesson learned, knowledge you acquired, or an experience that added to your understanding of the industry and/or the company?

Explanation / Answer

You will have to take care of the font requirements when you write the actual paper, but I can help you with pointers for the answers:

How do you feel about this being your last week on the job?  Would you like to continue working at this company?  Explain.

I feel happy and sad at the same time. Being my first exposure to the corporate world in an area where I have had my academics in, I have learnt a lot, been exposed to the organization's great work environment and culture, and have had a lot of fun in the process too. I absolutely look up to the CEO and the overall organization's vision, and yes, I would love to continue working with the company as a full time employee, given an opportunity

Have you completed all your assignments and projects?  If not, how are you planning to address the situation?

I have completed almost all the assignments and projects. However, there is one project deliverable which is pending which I am still working on. It is progressing a bit slowly due to multiple stakeholders involved from whom inputs are required. However, I plan to complete this by extending for a week, putting in extra hours and by working on some weekends.

Did you achieve the learning objectives you created at the beginning of the semester? Explain.

My basic learning objectives was to relate to how actual accounting is done at firms, especially in the field of corporate finance. I have worked on two projects which pertain to corporate finance and acounting/budgeting. I was able to relate to many of the concepts that I learnt in class by actually applying them to real work. So yes, my objectives have been met.

Is there any other business that you need to address before leaving?

No major business is pending

Can you step back and remember who really helped you learn your responsibilities? Explain.  Did it follow the formal structure of the company, or was it an informal structure?

It would be my mentor, John. He was almost like a college senior to me. He was very friendly, had a lot of informal talks with me, took me out for lunches and even for movies to make me comfortable considering this was my first job. He was always available whenever I had queries/doubts. He was instrumental in helping me learn my responsibilities

Have you progressed as an employee?  Explain.

Yes, I have seen and learnt what it takes to be an employee in a corporate organization. I have learnt the soft skills needed, the stakeholder management skills needed, corporate culture, practical ways of working in an organization and have also developed empathy towards people

Have you progressed as a member of the organization’s team?  Explain.

Yes, I have learnt true team management at the organization. I was part of a 4 member team for one of my projects, and experienced everything ranging from conflicts, conflict management, time management, delivering on commitments, and co-ordinating with senior stakeholders. I have also learnt the organization's working culture very well

Have you experienced personal and/or professional growth over the 10 weeks?

Yes, I have experienced both! I have become more mature and practical as a person, and professionally, this opportunity has given me a window to the corporate world

Have you considered what you will write in your letter of thanks to the organization?  Can you provide an example, such as a lesson learned, knowledge you acquired, or an experience that added to your understanding of the industry and/or the company?

I will thank all the people I worked with, my mentor, my buddy, and my line manager. I will also thank the HR department for ensuring that my onboarding was as smooth and hassle-free as possible. I truly felt at home.

The one key lesson learned was I saw how accounting standards are really used in an organization, and how the rules we study in class are actually applied. Not everything we learn in theory is applied the same way without modifications. I saw practical applications of the things that we read about. This was a great experience for me.
