Question

Velasquez (2012) points out that much of the study of ethics focuses on formal power that may have constraints based upon specific laws or formal practices of the organization. “…Organizations also contain informal pockets and channels of power: sources of power that do not appear on organizational charts and use of power that are covert and perhaps not recognized as legitimate” (p. 440).

Question: Research at least three articles and analyze which types of power have the most influence upon the culture, and ultimately the ethics, of the organization.

Explanation / Answer

It is very difficult to create ethical environment in the organisation. Both formal and informal powers have influence upon the culture and ethics of the organisation.

1.Based on my research, I found that informal powers have the most influence upon the culture and ethics of the organisation. As formal powers are related to authority, rewards and punishments so it may lead to "compliance orientation" while othe other hand, Informal powers are related to skills, abilities and traits of a leader so it may lead to "value orientation".And leaders can use social media websites or applications to inform about the ethical values.

2.As there is no need to get a formal position to affect change. It is more important to influence organisation by using social capital which can be increased by developing high quality relationships. If the social capital is improved, there will be increase in power and credibility of ethics program. So,informal power have the most influence upon the culture and ethics of the organisation.

3.Since a leader can gain deep understanding of ethical issues in the organisation and can ensure that members are aware of his interests and his understanding about ethical issues. Also he can gain expertise the the area of ethics,so informal powers may influence more in ethics and culture.
