Question

Hello, I am trying to figure out a computer program that will calculate the total amount of stock beams I will need for work. I am given various lengths of material needed for the job and I have to come up with the lowest amount of stock material we will need to purchase. For example, if we need 10 beams of length 5, and 10 beams of length 15, how many beams will I have to buy if the stock length is 20. This is just an example, in reality we are dealing with many more. My problem is that if I need to maximize material and I need beams, let's say, 10 that are 11 feet, 10 that are 6 feet, and 10 that are 4 feet, I need a program that will create the least amount of waste. Another example of input and output: I need 24 beams that are 20 feet and 24 beams that are 13 feet. The stock length is 24 feet. The output should be that I need to purchase 48 beams considering there is no way to make use of the waste. I'd like to be able to input the lengths of material that I need, the quantity of each, and the length of the stock material. My son is showing me how to use eclipse and java for this program, so keep that in mind. Thanks.
